[ Flashing back to this photo: taken at the beginning of 2017 ]⠀
It was that time of the year to sit in one of my favourite places and reflect on the past in order to dream up what I wanted my future year to look like. ⠀

I find myself today on October 15, 2018 doing exactly the same thing. I pose the question to you – why must we wait for a date such as “January 1” to have a mental check-in? In the same way we judge a book by its cover, we use the name of the date “January 1” as an excuse to motivate ourselves to set those dreams & goals we long to achieve.⠀⠀

Today on this very random day, I challenge you to live like it’s January 1st, dream like it’s January 1st, and get out there to make your dreams a reality – because the truth is, every time that clock strikes midnight, it’s that same fresh start we seem to wait 365 days for.⠀⠀

Take advantage of these fresh starts we get – every. single. day.

Let’s take a moment to ask ourselves why we wait to make these big changes, why we wait to commit to the goals we know we should commit to, and ultimately why we finally decide to take the leap on January 1st?

While brainstorming I came up with a few…

  • Expectations?
  • Pressure to follow what everyone else is doing?
  • Fear of failure?
  • Feeling of belonging?
  • Lack of confidence?
  • Right now, as you read this – something is popping into your mind… Is it one or all of the above?
These are all my reasons. Find yours.
What stops you? What pushes you?

Statistics show that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by the end of February. So while we wait to even set these goals, 80% of us don’t even keep them. The only reasons that will truly motivate you and KEEP you on track are external factors such as society or pressure of trends – but internal factors. It’ will be the core values you hold for yourself that keep you striving to work towards those goals. We don’t call them goals because they are easily attainable. We call them goals because we work really freaking hard towards them.

In life, the moments that stay with you and the moments that enrich your life will come along side that hard work and struggle. But bottom line is that it will be worth it.

So – here we go, are you ready? Yes, you are.

“Let it all go. Expect Miracles. Wait without anxiety. And know that the Universe has your back” – Gabrielle Bernstein

A call from a then stranger ultimately lead me to find my home at Spin Society.

Seems weird, right? When a friend of a friend shoots you a random message on facebook saying that they’ve followed your posts for a while and are wondering if you’d have a minute to chat. I wanted to just ignore it – this guy had no clue what I was going through and as if I’d have any time to deal with him when I could hardly take care of myself. Curiosity got the best of me, and minutes later my phone rang.

That call changed the course of my life in more than a few ways. That call changed my physical and mental health, it eventually allowed me to leave my corporate job, and it ultimately led me to find my home in Vancouver – Spin Society.

Previously profusely pessimistic, I put no weight in ‘the right place at the right time’, or the Universe. I thought it was all bullshit and for some reason was wired with negative thought patterns. Today, I could not be further from that mindset – thanks to Sean (the stranger).

He was the guy that for some reason felt that May 9, 2016 was the day that he would call me (now that I look back, that was 5 years to the day that I started my first corporate job – not a coincidence). Here’s the short of it: I hadn’t slept more than 3 ish hours a night in a decade, on that day I was on day 5 of not leaving my apartment (or bed), and I was experiencing stress induced fainting spells more frequently than I cared to admit. But on the outside I was a fun, loving, healthy, 20 something y/o. Sean wanted to help transition me to a high quality, natural supplement line, and then I could get on with living my “best life”.

What Sean’s call actually did was change my life. His high quality natural supplement line, Isagenix – changed absolutely EVERYTHING. Within days I felt a mental clarity that I’d never had, I started consistently sleeping 8 solid hours, and my energy was through the freaking roof.

Now, if you know me, you know that when I’m in I’m ALL in, and if I believe in something, I’m passionate AF about it. So what did I do? Quit my corporate job – obviously (LOL)…..all in, right? I had to begin right away, I had to start sharing Isagenix with everyone, and I had to deal with a lot of people closest to me thinking I was losing my freaking mind. I decided to jump, and I had one choice – to build some wings on the way down.

That leap of faith led me to a yoga studio, where I realigned a lot of my beliefs, I went to fckin work on who I was as a person, and I started to build a life that I was stoked to live. I was genuinely happy for the first time in a really long time.

Cue Cody and Lucy. (The right place at the right time..) Cody pretty much made me sign up for my first class at Spin Society – not even kidding, he pushed me out of the way of my computer and literally started creating my profile for me. A few months later, Lucy asked me to join the team. And as I sit here now (in the office at SS – obviously) I actually get emotional reflecting on the journey that got me here. There were a lot of dark days and tough decisions, but man I wouldn’t change any of it. Vancouver is home now. Spin Society and Isagenix are my PASSION – like, for life kinda passion. And this community is my FAMILY.

Trust the timing of your life, and trust that the Universe has you right where you’re meant to be.

    Xx,

    Meg

“How we do one thing, is how we do everything.”

The first time I heard this quote I was during one of Lucy’s rides, I had just started spinning at Spin Society and was busy falling in love with our community and in that moment, I was all the way in. Those words resonated deeply with me but at the same time I wondered how she could come up with such motivational words while riding at full speed let alone say anything at all but now, as I coach alongside Lucy, I know the truth: it’s not easy.

We practice, we cross train, we take each other’s rides for inspiration and we give each other feedback every time we do. Coaching is our job and all of us are deeply devoted to what we do and all that training and commitment, combined with time and experience, does allow for some ease in class but trust, there are days when nothing comes easy.

When the mic cord snags on our bike seat or, even worse, on the handlebars of bike 12 as we run past and our entire body flies backwards to a halt. When we try to take our shirt off whilst on the bike and our hat and mic go flying into the darkness. When the right pedal literally comes off the bike as we are running in the saddle. When we kick over the candles and nearly set the place ablaze. When our bra strap breaks in the middle of the second song and we must hold it in place for the rest of the ride. Or, the mother of all moments, when we go to change the music and our sweat drips onto the “next’ button forcing the music to skip through Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and Mariah before we finally get control of it.

Then there are the days when our baby has kept us up all night and we are exhausted. When tragedy has struck in our personal lives. When our relationship feels like it’s falling apart. When we get fired from our other job.

Those are the days when it’s not easy. And those are the days we have a choice to make, do we let that embarrassing moment ruin the ride for us and everyone else or do we take a deep breath and smile secretly at ourselves / laugh out loud / ask you to laugh with us? Do we let whatever is going on outside of the studio negatively affect our class? Shawn suggests we try to handle it all with the poise and grace of a wild gazelle but to be honest, I feel more like a water buffalo on those days.

On our best days, we remember that how we do one thing, is how we do everything and we lean in to the embarrassment, hilarity and discomfort of whatever is going on because we know that these moments are not the moments that make the difference to our riders. The moments that make the difference to our riders are when we are engaged, focused and committed to giving you the best experience possible. All this to say, sometimes when you see us on the podium, we’ve had a crazy ass day but with a little grace and a lot of levity we achieve what we set out to – give you the best ride possible.

What about you? Do you strive to laugh in the moments that we can’t control? Do you leave it all behind when you walk into the studio? If you work to focus on your ride, the beat and sweating you worries away, I promise you will be glad that you did.

Anyone who has ever been fortunate enough to partake in one of Shawn Ayers’ spin classes will know that the energy he brings to the room is infectious to say the least. I’ve thrown my unfit self into a few, and although my coordination is that of a three-year old, I felt great (albeit very sweaty) afterwards. With his encouraging words and contagious spirit, he commands the room, while allowing the riders to escape to with his supercharged, electro-house meets Beyoncé-heavy playlists.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Shawn has become a leader in the fitness community and is on a mission to inspire change. When he’s not coaching as senior instructor at Spin Society, he jumps on every opportunity to soak in the West Coast’s reputable outdoor lifestyle. I recently asked Shawn how he disciplines himself, what rituals he’s acquired and how he manages to bring so much vigour and good vibes to each and every class.

Continue reading here for the remainder of Shawn’s interview with Lolita Magazine!

Valentine’s Day has come and gone but let’s focus on love a little bit longer, shall we? Not just any love BTW, let’s talk about self-love. The love that can propel us forward with daring choices into limitless possibility or, alternatively, the love that can help us play and stay small.

With abundant self-love comes the best hyphenated “self” words, words like self-worth, self-esteem, self-care, self-acceptance and with all of that comes the type of love and life we all dream of. One in which we can reach for that job, that love, that connection, that body, that booty and that bank account with confidence and clarity.

Without abundant self-love though, we are faced with the negative hyphenated “self” words, words like self-doubt, self-sabotage, self-pity and with all of that comes the decision to stay small. We continue to put ourselves in situations at work, in our relationships, at the grocery store, at the spin studio that won’t allow us to grow and those same old outcomes will affirm what we think about ourselves, that we aren’t good enough or lovable or healthy or any number of things we say to ourselves that aren’t very kind. See how that all comes full circle? Self-doubt, self-sabotage and self-pity shape our choices and those choices lead to outcomes that point to the evidence that we seek to keep us small.

So, what do we do? How do we learn to love ourselves and all the awesome power we possess and in doing so make decisions that lead us to exactly where we want to be? It’s simple, we fall madly, deeply and passionately in love with ourselves. And how do we do that? That’s simple too.

Every single time you look in the mirror say, “I love you”. The minute you open your eyes in the morning say, “I love myself”. The minute your feet hit the floor in the morning say, “I love myself”. When you’re stuck in traffic, riding your bike, in the shower repeat out loud the words, “I love myself” and one day, it will be true. This takes dedication and commitment and we cannot quit, ever, we must tell ourselves every single day for the rest of our lives.

Years ago, at the end of a particularly heart-wrenching breakup after a particularly heart-wrenching relationship and at the beginning of my enlightenment (insert massive eye roll) journey I walked around, talking to myself like a crazy person for months. “I love myself, I love myself, I love myself, I love myself”. While I was jogging, lifting weights, showering, cooking, walking to the store. While it hadn’t been true when I started the exercise and in fact I was riddled with self-doubt and self-loathing, every day I practiced loving myself it became truer and more real and more concrete in my brain and body and soul.

Now, whenever I feel self-doubt creep in, I tell myself that I love myself. When I regret a decision that I’ve made, I replace negative self-talk with a simple “I love you”. While it doesn’t solve the problem, it brings me back to a baseline of self-love, self-care and self-esteem and that baseline allows me to solve the problem with a more compassionate view.

I expect to see you all of you at the studio mouthing the words “I love myself” the next time I see you. We can do it together.

    Much Love,

    Megan

Master Instructor Lucy Ulmer of Spin Society Shares Her Tips for a Great Ride

unnamed (5)Drink water. We’ve heard it before. If you’ve been in class with me I’m sure you’ve heard me say it more than once. Hydration involves more than just water though so today I’m sharing my top five ways to stay hydrated on and off the bike.

Considering where to go for your first or 100th indoor cycling class? If you have never taken a Spin Society class, you are in for a treat. For beginners, forget what you have heard about your average indoor cycling class. This workout will leave you breathless in a puddle of sweat and have you signing up for your next class the minute your first one ends. Expect high-intensity intervals, hill climbs, and sprints that spark the athlete and inner rock star in all of us. We work hard and test our individual limits on the bike all while having fun and encouraging our fellow riders. Every class begins with an inspirational message of why we are riding and builds into a challenging and uplifting cardio workout. So that you are prepared, I have some helpful tips for your next ride.

    Fuel for your body

What you eat before and after class will fuel your workout and maximize your efforts and results. If you fuel correctly pre-workout you will work harder, prevent low blood sugar, which leads to light-headedness and fatigue. My personal favorite morning pre-workout meal 1-2 hours ahead of time is oatmeal with some almond butter, a sprinkle of cinnamon and half a banana. For example, if I am headed into an evening Spin Society session I will have an afternoon snack from Living Foods hOMegrown and a bottled juice from Krokodile Pear. And most importantly, stay hydrated before, during and after class with water. Post-workout your muscles are in repair mode and it is important to feed your body protein, as well as carbohydrates. Many times if I’m on the run, I will make a smoothie and include Vega’s performance protein. I love the chocolate flavour!

    Get there early

Allow yourself 15 minutes before class to ensure your spot, set up your bike and ask any questions before the ride starts. Each instructor at Spin Society is happy to assist with a basic “how-to” on hand positions, tension adjustments as well as clipping in and out of the bike. Proper bike fit is critical to experiencing a good workout and staying safe. In order to reserve a bike, you can register ahead of time online. Once class starts, your bike is released to those on the waiting list.

    What to wear

Get ready to sweat! I suggest moisture-wicking fabrics that allow your body to breathe while remaining comfortable. Personally, I look for items at Lululemon with Silverescent technology to eliminate stinky smells. If you are looking for some extra padding, try a pair of cycling shorts from your local bike shop. At Spin Society we provide our riders with complementary cycling-specific shoes for class or you can bring your own shoes (SPD compatible).

    Listen to your body

Whether you are a newbie or have been cycling for years listening to your body is the most important part of your indoor cycling experience. Instructors will cue when to work hard and when to pull back leaving the amount of resistance you choose to add in your hands. Part of the Spin Society experience is coming in as an individual and leaving as a teammate. You will be asked to keep the same pace, but not at the expense of your own body. If you need to take a break, drop some resistance, slow down or grab a sip of water, do so. Class success comes from engaging the core, leading with your heart, looking forward, finding rhythm through music, testing your limits and bringing a positive attitude. A smile definitely helps too.

    Post-Class Feelings

Don’t be surprised when you leave Spin Society glowing with an abundance of energy! That is the fun part of indoor cycling. But, if you are new or it has been a while since you jumped on the saddle, chances are your bum will be sore. Keep coming back and after about 10 classes your body will start to understand what is happening. The key to getting stronger on the bike and with most things in life is consistency.

Check us out and I look forward to meeting you on the bike!

    xo,

    Lucy
